Hwhup The Deans List? The Jason Dean here, bringing an end to the Weekend like it was a trip to Portland. You had the most incredible time, did a lot of fun things, saw some wonderful people, ate amazing food…then before you know it, you’re home, waking up in the middle of the night, coughing, covered in snot and slobber, more tired than you’ve ever been in your entire life…

Or was that just me?

Anyways. Let’s get into it.

New Art in my own space

Here’s what I’ve been cooking up in the lab 😎

Since I didn’t Live Stream this past Tuesday, you’re going to have to handle an assortment of images from my trip to Portland. Don’t worry though- none of them feature a seal.

Driving from Eugene to Yachats, we made a couple of stops on the coast. At both of the stops, there thousands and thousands of these purple things laying on the beach. I’m assuming it’s some sort of bottom-O’-the-food-chain creature, although when I first encountered them I thought they were flower petals. I was struck by the mundane nature of these beautiful flower-petal looking things laying against the rocks, a juxtaposition of temporal beauty and enduring plainness.

Speaking of temporal beauty…

In an offhand comment on Schitt’s Creek (AKA one of the best TV shows ever made), Sebastien Raine introduced me to the idea of anti-portraits and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them since. In case it isn’t apparent, anti-portraits are the opposite of portraits (duh) in that they “challenge the conventional approach of capturing the physical likeness or idealized representation” of a person or people.

Anti-portraits feel much truer to who I am as an artist and a person than standard portraiture. I’m not sure how I’ll incorporate this into The Jason Dean Photography; most people like to pay money for pictures of themselves that, um, look like themselves.

Still, I want to take more pictures of people like this photo that I took of myself. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, or are curious about, let me know 😎

Um, okay, I lied, that is A FRICKIN’ SEAL IN THE FRICKIN’ OCEAN.

Mother’s Day Craft Show

Next weekend (!), you can find me at Booth 106 for the TV6 Mother’s Day Craft Show 😎 If your mom has exquisite taste (and how could she not; she gave birth to you after all!), then you should stop by my booth and buy her a gift worthy of her elevated status.

The Craft Show days and times are as follows:

  • Friday 5 PM - 9 PM

  • Saturday 10 AM - 6 PM

  • Sunday 11 AM - 4 PM

Hope to see you there!

Waves are Words: The Many Voices of Lake Superior Artist Reception

Mark your calendars, folks- Saturday, May 23 from 1-4 PM, I will be at The Gallery in Marquette for my first-ever Artist Reception! Stop by, say ‘Hi’, ‘Hey’, or the incandescently fancy ‘Hwhup’. If I’m feeling particularly charitable, I may even engage in a fist bump.

Plus- snacks!

100 Day Project Update

Here’s where ‘We, The Songs We’ve Sung’ stands just one week out from the whole 100 days. The project itself has actually concluded, but I’m about 10 days behind for travel so mine is still going.

Waves are Wednesdays Preview

Behold: the image that I’ll be sharing this week for ‘Waves are Wednesdays’ on social media.

Thanks so much, folks. I really appreciate you!!! Lots of pretty cool things are happening for me, and none of them wouldn’t be if I didn’t have your support and encouragement. 🫶
