Hwhup The Deans List? The Jason Dean here, bringing an end to the Weekend like Obi-Wan has the high ground but with 100% less loss of limbs.

Hopefully.

Anyways. Let’s get into it.

Gallery Show coming real darn soon!

Dude, I am PUMPED to make this announcement! So a few weeks ago, I shared that I was going to be having a little gallery show ‘coming soon’. Well, soon is now sooner. Starting on April 20th, The Gallery will be hosting my very first gallery show, ‘Waves are Words: The Many Voices of Lake Superior’.

It’s so surreal to have my first show pay homage to such an important part of why I’m here today. Lake Superior is one of the main reasons I got into photography and Waves are Words pays tribute to an important chapter in my journey as an artist.

‘Waves are Words’ will reflect multiple aspects of the waters of Lake Superior, from reflections of the Upper Harbor Ore Dock’s lights in the early morning to air bubbles trying to escape frozen captivity to sand ripples under a calm surface, Waves are Words: The Many Voices of Lake Superior is a love song to the strongest, scariest, fiercest, most beautiful woman in the whole wide world- Gitche Gumee.

Throughout the month of May, I’ll be highlighting the individual pieces on social media and sharing BTS (Behind The Scenes) content on my Instagram as I prep for the show. Get ready to see Lake Superior as you’ve never seen her before!

Art in my own space

In honor of the theme, I will be editing new and reworking old wave photos on my YouTube Live Stream (every Tuesday evening at 7 PM EST) and sharing them here. If you like photographs of water in various stages of motion, you’re not going to miss the next couple of months of The Weekender!

This photo, titled ‘Belonging’, is a reworked photo I took in December of 2022. I just love taking wave photos head on. I’ve talked about this before (and will again, as is my wont), but when I do this I like to imagine that the waves crashing on the shore are bites being taken by a gigantic water monster, complete with giant teeth and even some rabid frothing. This photo was taken at the beach across from the Superior Dome along Lakeshore Blvd, which is low-key a neat spot to watch the waves roll in.

So funny story about this photo. I’ll spare you the long version, but my…well, my photo storage workflow is a mess, which is how I started to edit this photo on Live Stream and then realized that I had already edited it.

Whoops!

Thankfully I handled it okay, edited the edit, and, um, seamlessly moved on to the next one.

Last December, Myles and I hiked out to Wetmore Landing- you know, back when the idea of winter was novel and before the waters of Lake Superior were blocked off by gigantic shelves of ice. I took this photo of the sand ripples just below the surface along the shore. I gotta tell you, as a photographer with abstract tendencies, Lake Superior is the gift that keeps on giving the whole year. Right, Cousin Eddie?

TV6 Mother’s Day Craft Show

I’m excited to announce that I will be a vendor at the TV6 Mother’s Day Craft Show this year! The Craft Show will take place the weekend of May 8-10. If you’re in Marquette, stop by and see me in Booth #106 and, hey, while you’re there, you should buy some art for your mom 😎

More information to come.

100 Day Project Update

Here’s where ‘We, The Songs We’ve Sung’ currently stands. I did miss a few days last week while I was down in Ann Arbor and will be missing a week while I’m out in Portland, but the project continues to progress nicely.

Waves are Wednesdays Preview

Even though I’m going to be sharing A LOT of wave photos over the next month, there will still be ‘Waves are Wednesdays’ because it’s important for me to let folks know how grateful I am for all the support and encouragement I receive!

Picture was taken on December 10, 2025 at the Black Rocks in Marquette

This segment is on hiatus until the fall while I prepare for my gallery show and the craft show/farmer’s market circuit. That said, if there’s any artist/musician/small business owner that you would like to see get their flowers when it returns, send me an email at [email protected] and I’ll add them to my list.

Thank you for being here, folks. I appreciate you greatly! If you’re subscribed, it’s not by accident; even if we don’t agree on everything, we both have a mutual appreciation for the beauty around us and the kindness within us. That’s pretty fricking cool.

If you aren’t subscribed, I’m sure the same thing is true- so why not just go ahead and make it official? Click on Ye Olde Email Delivery Portal and get The Weekender delivered straight to your inbox every Sunday morning.

See you around,

Jason
